What Has Yoga Taught Me About Looking After My Lower Back
Lower back pain is one of the most common ailments in today’s world. The reasons for it are manifold, starting from prolonged sitting in chairs, bad posture, weak core and much more.
In the past, I had my fair share of lower back problems and in this post I will describe my yoga therapy approach in alleviating and healing lower back pain and sciatica. For more information about my yoga classes in Kentish Town, please contact me.
When the muscles of the lower back go into spasm, they can compress the lumbar discs. This compression may irritate or aggravate the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain that radiates from the lower back into the buttocks and sometimes all the way down the leg to the toes — a condition commonly known as sciatica.
In yoga therapy, the first thing to do is to create more space in the spine, including releasing the spasm in the back muscles and tractioning the spine. If you book a yoga session at my studio in Kentish Town, you will be given a set of exercises tailored especially for you, which, if done on daily basis, will make the pain begin to subside within a couple of weeks.
This exercise is designed to gently traction the spine and the muscles of the lower back.
As that happens, a wider variety of postures is introduced to support proper alignment and healthy movement patterns. This is also the ideal time to begin strengthening the core muscles. A strong, stable core provides essential support for the spine and plays a key role in preventing future episodes of lower back pain.

The Yoga Therapy Approach
In yoga therapy, the first priority is to create more space in the spine. This includes:
• Releasing muscular spasms in the back
• Gently tractioning and decompressing the spine
• Reducing pressure on the lumbar discs and sciatic nerve
With patience, consistency, and proper guidance, yoga therapy can offer both relief from current discomfort and a sustainable path toward long-term spinal health.
